Jubilee Wood - Ashlawn Road

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's historic 2012 Diamond Jubilee The Woodland Trust want millions of people across the UK to come together and plant 6 million trees, creating hundreds of Jubilee Woods and 60 special Diamond Woods.

With the possibility of creation of one of only 60 Diamond Woods in the UK to mark HM the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Rugby Borough Council have been working with the Woodland Trust to see if or how Rugby could mark this Diamond Jubilee with a living lasting legacy in honour of the Queen.

A Diamond Wood is at least 60 acres of new publicly accessible woodland. The proposed site is the land off Ashlawn Road below the proposed Cemetery/Crematorium site. It will be a mixture of native species, open spaces and glades, with a wide variety of habitats to significantly enhance the biodiversity of the area and encourage informal recreational uses. You could call it a "Country Park".

This initiative is NOT directly linked on the current planning application, but they would obviously complement each other very well.

Rugby Borough Council launched this Borough wide public consultation over the Jubilee weekend to see if this is an initiative that Rugby wants to embrace. We will be using the usual media outlets, twitter, Facebook internet and Bluetooth to start off. We will have displays in a couple of locations such as the Town Hall, possibly RAGM/Library and will be seeking to have these at each of the upcoming Community Forum events in June.
